"Paintings are made up of a variety of symbols. To me all of my paintings are symbols of what I am thinking and observing in my everyday life. A barn, a tree, a lake all of these things are symbols of what the artist observes around them. My symbols are a combination of what I see and my observations filtered through my thoughts and emotions. Sometimes they are very abstract, coming directly from my intuitive way of painting and sometimes they are recognizable, these too have an abstract variable to them in that I often use recognizable symbols for my abstract thoughts. All of my works have many layers of painting and thoughts that go in to their making. I feel all of humankind is involved in what life hands to us. It is the combination of all of these things and the way that we react to them that I am trying to express in my new series, 'Facets of Life'- portrayed in a Totem fashion; Influences from recent Graduate work done in New Mexico. They are layers of paint and texture material with symbols stacked one on the other in the shape of a totem. Very much like a list of things. To me they have a very basic simple feel to them even oriental, I want to express a simple sacred emotion to the miracle of life and the art of being fully involved in living it."

Paula Rayer Nemec's work covers a vast range of mediums. Painted works on paper and canvas, molded papers that often become sculptural and steel sculpture that often times becomes functional. Always they verge on the abstract with a touch of reality either in her symbols, shapes or figurative work. She is always painting her inner visions of the world around her. She delights in capturing the human condition, the life force that is within all of us. Capturing the essence of what she perceives at that moment. Her journals are journeys through words, poetry and visual images. Her works are a combining of the visual and the verbal, the abstract and the conceptual. Paula's passion is her perseverance in the creative process. To always be changing and growing, constantly asking why and why not, pushing the process in new directions. Her love is to enable other creative people to share in this process also. She does this through her teaching and lecturing around the country. She say "My art and my life are always in process, always changing, taking new shapes and going down different avenues of creativity."
